Who are The Concrete Shamans?
“Two unique creatives, unexpectedly woven into each other’s lives, forging an inseparable bond.”
Merrick and Patrick’s journey began when their paths crossed in early 2017 at a recovery meeting, marking the start of a deep and enduring friendship. This bond evolved over time, first into a close friendship and eventually into a loving marriage, laying the groundwork for their future collaborative endeavors.
Patrick, a native of the southern United States, grew up on a Kentucky farm and spent most of his adult life in Nashville, with a notable seven-year period in Chicago. He pursued studies in acting and comedy at the renowned Second City, seeking to hone his humor skills. However, he candidly admits that his move to Chicago, initially for comedic training, eventually became overshadowed by his struggles with substance abuse.
Merrick, originally from Chicago, showed an early passion for creative writing, leading him to pursue a college education in the field. His journey into storytelling and songwriting began at a young age, but it was not without its challenges, including a stint in rehab. Merrick’s commitment to sobriety started at 22, marking a pivotal point in his life.
Despite their age difference, Merrick and Patrick discovered a shared world shaped by their unique interests and experiences. Patrick had been a long-time practitioner of Shamanism, while Merrick’s fascination with esoteric and spiritual matters had deepened following a significant trip to Peru.
Post-marriage, the couple chose a quieter, rural life, seeking respite from the urban hustle. During the 2020 lockdown, they ventured into music, releasing their debut EP, “Aliens With Candy,” on Soundcloud. They dedicated themselves to improving their musical skills, including guitar, keyboard, and vocal training.
Their music, a dynamic blend of various genres, is known for its unpredictable changes in beat and tempo, reflecting their eclectic appreciation of different musical styles.
In addition to their musical pursuits, Merrick and Patrick serve as recovery coaches and spiritual mentors. They have developed a unique form of Shamanism, “Concrete Shamanism,” which intriguingly integrates modern pop culture into spiritual teachings. This innovative approach can involve interpreting a John Waters film as sacred text or a Madonna song as a hymn.
Currently, they are enthusiastically working on their next album, tentatively titled Hungry Gossip Snake.
